Die Rolle der viralen Hepatitis als Bedrohung der \u00f6ffentlichen Gesundheit wurde lange Zeit untersch\u00e4tzt. Erst k\u00fcrzlich haben die Vereinten Nationen in ihrer „2030 Agenda f\u00fcr nachhaltige Entwicklung“ zu internationalen Ma\u00dfnahmen zur Bek\u00e4mpfung der viralen Hepatitis und zur Reduzierung der Krankheitslast aufgerufen. Die Haupttodesursache ist das Hepatitis-B-Virus (HBV), das Leberzirrhose und Leberkrebs verursacht. Weltweit sterben jedes Jahr mehr als 1 Million Menschen an den Folgen einer HBV-Infektion.<\/p>\n
Zur Vorbeugung einer HBV-Infektion steht ein prophylaktischer Impfstoff zur Verf\u00fcgung, aber mehr als 3% der Weltbev\u00f6lkerung (ca. 254 Millionen Menschen) sind chronisch infiziert und profitieren nicht mehr von diesem Impfstoff. F\u00fcr Menschen, die an chronischer Hepatitis B leiden, gibt es bis heute keine heilende Behandlungsm\u00f6glichkeit.<\/p>\n

Die Europ\u00e4ische Kommission hat daher das vom Helmholtz Zentrum M\u00fcnchen geleitete Projekt TherVacB f\u00fcr eine siebenj\u00e4hrige F\u00f6rderung im Rahmen des Programms Horizont 2020 ausgew\u00e4hlt.
Ein Konsortium f\u00fchrender Virologen, Immunologen und \u00c4rzte, die auf die Behandlung von viraler Hepatitis spezialisiert sind, wird einen neu entwickelten therapeutischen Impfstoff, TherVacB, als Immuntherapie zur Heilung von HBV einsetzen. TherVacB wird in einer klinischen Studie evaluiert, die im Juni 2025 in Europa und in Afrika beginnt. Die Integration eines Partnerstandortes in Tansania soll helfen, lokale Kapazit\u00e4ten f\u00fcr die Diagnose und Behandlung von Hepatitis B aufzubauen und ein wichtiges Ziel des Konsortiums unterst\u00fctzen – das Bewusstsein f\u00fcr Hepatitis B zu erh\u00f6hen.<\/p>\n
