Frankfurt University Hospital
General Information
Founded in 1914, the University Hospital Frankfurt, which belongs to the Goethe University Frankfurt, is the largest healthcare center in Hessen, Germany. It operates 33 medical clinics and institutes, treating over 46,000 inpatients and caring for more than 480,000 outpatients annually. The hospital’s 1st Centre of Internal Medicine, specializing in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Pneumology (ZIM1), has extensive expertise in hepatology and hepatitis research. Over the years, the center has participated in numerous vaccine trials and early-stage clinical studies. The hospital’s hepatology outpatient clinic is one of the largest in Germany, providing care for a significant number of patients with chronic viral hepatitis. In collaboration with the gastroenterologic clinical study unit, the hospital is actively involved in both national and international clinical trials, including industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies. Many of these trials focus on viral hepatitis and include research on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and vaccine development.
The University Hospital Frankfurt, with its extensive experience in viral hepatitis research and clinical trials, is dedicated to advancing new treatment options through its contribution to the TherVacB project’s clinical study. Dr. Kathrin Sprinzl will serve as Principal Investigator for this study, supported by Prof. Dr. Stefan Zeuzem as Deputy.
Role in TherVacB
The Centre of Internal Medicine, specializing in Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Pneumology (ZIM1) at the Frankfurt University Hospital (GU Frankfurt) will lead the clinical trial of TherVacB at the gastroenterologic clinical study unit.

Kathrin Sprinzl
Consultant, Medical Lead at the ZIM1 Clinical Study Unit, University Hospital Frankfurt of the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany
Dr. Sprinzl is a medical doctor with over 20 years of experience in gastroenterology and hepatology. She has specialized on viral hepatitis and participated as sub-investigator and principal investigator in many clinical trials adressing HBV and HDV. Kathrin Sprinzl also brings value experience in the implementation of vaccine trials, including from early-phase studies starting from phase 1.

Stefan Zeuzem
Professor and Head of the Department for Gastroenterology, Endocrinology and Pneumology (ZIM1), University Hospital Frankfurt of the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany
Prof. Zeuzem is a renowned expert in gastroenterology and hepatology with over 30 years of experience, specializing in viral hepatitis. Since 2007, Stefan Zeuzem has been Head of the Department of Internal Medicine I (ZIM1) at the University Hospital Frankfurt. Prof. Zeuzem has served as principal inverstigator in the development of numerous treatments for viral hepatitis and is widely recognized internationally for his extensive publication record and contributions to the field.
