University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, I. Department of Internal Medicine
General Information
The I. Medical Department for Gastroenterology with Sections Infectious diseases and Tropical diseases at University Medical Center Hamburg Eppendorf is one of the large hepatology centers in Northern Germany and provides in- and out-patient treatment of various infectious and digestive diseases. Over 1000 chronically HBV infected patients are attending the UKE Viral Hepatitis Outpatient Clinic per year. Patients have the opportunity to participate in different clinical studies for the treatment hepatitis B and D, including phase I clinical trials at our study center. Moreover, vaccination studies for infectious diseases are successfully carried out at the Bernhard Nocht Center for Clinical Trials (BNCCT) and in close collaboration with the CTC North Study Center. The I. Medical Clinic is connected to the Hamburg – Lübeck – Borstel – Riems sites of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and participates in the DZIF project “HBV cure”. In this process, blood and liver samples are regularly collected of hepatitis B patients for the purpose of translational research.
